  • Describe the Proposed Course/Change (attach any relevant documents)*

This is a co-requisite version of English 1101, the traditional first-semester general education composition course for students at Shawnee State University, a course which has been piloted for the past two years. Students who take this course meet with traditional English 1101 students for two class periods per week, but the students in 1201 also meet for an additional class period each week for extra help with their writing.

Students who are eligible for the co-requisite version currently have to enroll in a special section of English 1101 AND a corresponding section of English 1999; adding the new 1201 to the catalog will streamline registration for these students.

  • Explain the rationale for this proposal (attach any relevant documents)*

The course was developed because the Ohio Department Of Higher Education has been encouraging schools to develop co-requisite composition classes for students who, in the past, would have been required to take a developmental writing course before beginning the general education composition sequence. Research has indicated that students who enroll in a co-requisite composition course are more apt to succeed than are students who enroll in a developmental course during their first semester and the credit-bearing course during their second semester. The ODHE's Strong Start to Finish initiative was developed in part to bring co-requisite courses to scale at Ohio's colleges and universities.

  • How will the proposed change affect other departments/programs/courses? (attach any relevant documents)*

Because we have piloted this co-requisite course for two years, there should be no additional impact on other departments or programs when it becomes a permanent offering listed in the catalog. (When we first began piloting the co-requisite course, the enrollment in University College's English 0096 dropped substantially.)

New Courses
  • Attach a syllabus using the file upload tool on the right side of your screen.  The icon resembles a piece of paper with a green arrow in the bottom right corner.

  • Course fees are charged when the department code appears in the far right column of each course listing.  The fee is calculated by multiplying the number of credit hours for the course by the amount shown for the department below:

The course fee covers costs that exceed basic instruction, such as lab equipment and software; program materials and supplies; and coordination of field placements and internships.  The fee is applied to selective courses where appropriate.

Student fees are subject to change.  Shawnee State University reserves the right to make, without prior notice, any fee adjustment that may become necessary.

  • Specify the effects on teaching load, institutional resources, and subsidy level

Because we have been piloting this course for the past two years, there should be no additional effects on teaching load, institutional resources, or subsidy level once the course becomes permanent.

In fact, making this course a permanent offering will actually have a minor financial benefit: ODHE's Strong Start to Finish initiative has a grant program to help schools improve their co-requisite offerings, and we are slated to receive a $19,000 CLASS grant from ODHE, primarily for professional development, in part because we pledged to make the co-requisite English course permanent.

  • Essential Learning Outcomes
    Critical thought (a, b, c, d); written communication (a, b, c, d, e, f); information literacy (a, b, c, d, e)
  • Rationale for inclusion of course in the particular content category

Discourse and Composition (English 1101) is already in the Critical Thinking and Communication Competencies category. English 1201 is the same course, except that students will meet for an extra class period per week for additional coaching on their writing. The students complete all of the same assignments as students in English 1101 (as well as some additional assignments designed to help nurture their growth as writers), and their work is held to the same standards as students in English 1101. Therefore, it is appropriate to put it in the same content category as English 1101.

  • Which courses are likely to experience an enrollment decline if this course is approved and added to the GEP? Estimate the extent of these declines.

There will be a decrease in the number of students enrolling in English 1101 since this will be an alternative to English 1101. However, because the same people who teach English 1101 will also teach English 1201, the result should not have a negative impact on any faculty.
