  • Identify Enhancement

The Bachelor of Individualized studies is currently used for two purposes. The first is as a completion degree which allows students who might be otherwise unable to meet the requirements of another program to earn a Bachelor's degree from Shawnee State. (i.e. students who transfer in from another institution with over 100 credit hours.) Most of the students who seek the BIS do so for its completion function.

The second use is as an integrative degree which allows students to tailor their curriculum and craft an interdisciplinary program that we do not otherwise offer.

By separating the two functions into distinct degrees, it will become possible to audit the degrees and allow for better management and advising. It is the intention of GATE to convert the BIS to meet the completion function, and also create a future BA of Integrative Studies to serve the interdisciplinary function.

    No Program Learning Outcomes
  • Reason(s) for the Enhancement:*

Rationale: This enhancement is part of a collection of changes being proposed by the department of General and Transitional Education (GATE) within the University College.

This first change would transform our existing Bachelor of Individualized Studies degree into a General Studies type of degree to clarify the program and enhance its appeal for a small but valuable segment of our students. This is likely to include our post-traditional learners who may be switching careers with previously earned college credit, our military veterans, and students who have recently completed the Associate of Arts in General Studies and who may wish to continue toward the bachelor’s degree. The existing General Studies AA can effectively function as a 2+2 pathway leading to the Bachelor of General Studies.Students seeking to use the General Studies degree in a similar fashion to the current BIS should be able to continue to do so without difficulty.

(The second change which would occur next academic year would be the creation of a new B.A. of Integrated Studies within the University College. This program would allow students to individually tailor their course of study by combining multiple minors. This offers a more coherent curricular approach than our current BIS and would be easier for students and faculty to conceptualize and thus properly advise.)
