    The Master of Public Health (MPH) degree is a comprehensive and dynamic curriculum designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in the evolving field of public health.   • Essential Learning Outcomes
    Upon completing the MPH program, students will be able to: 1. Grasp Public Health Fundamentals: Understand the core ideas and theories of public health, its history, and its role in enhancing health and preventing diseases within communities and globally. 2. Evaluate Health Influences: Analyze the various factors – such as biology, society, environment, and behavior – impacting health, identifying major contributors to health inequalities. 3. Apply Epidemiology Techniques: Utilize epidemiological methods to study disease patterns, interpret health trends, and gauge the outcomes of public health actions. 4. Conduct Effective Research: Plan, execute, and interpret public health research using appropriate methods, encompassing data collection and analysis. 5. Assess Health Policies and Systems: Examine health policies and systems to uncover avenues for enhancement, taking into account the influence of political, economic, ethical, and social factors. 6. Utilize Biostatistics Techniques: Employ statistical tools to analyze health data, decipher research findings, and make informed decisions within public health practice. 7. Promote Health and Prevent Disease: Devise and implement proficient strategies to encourage health and prevent diseases across diverse populations, considering cultural and societal nuances. 8. Public Health Leadership: Demonstrate effective leadership skills in public health settings, including the ability to initiate change, manage resources, and adapt to evolving healthcare landscapes.
  • Rationale for Program or change*

    MPH graduates are in demand.  Due to the current pandemic, that demand has only continued to rise.  Out of BSHS students surveyed the current interest to pursue, a MPH by BSHS students is 82.9 %. Employment opportunities are growing with the growing healthcare support and community and social service occupations. SSU has health science and behavioral health certificate that will not only serve the public, but is a desired degree.

    National Demand: 32% projected growth in the field with 51,800-job opening projected each year. (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2021)

    State Demand: Current 850 jobs listed (Indeed, 2021)

    Local Demand: 670, jobs listed within 100 miles of SSU (Indeed, 2021)

    We have a natural feeder program with the BSHS

    STAT 5130 will be utilized for the MPHP program, the impact would require offering the course. We will collaborate with the Math department for out need.

    Two fulltime BSHS faculty will move to MPHP opening a BSHS full-time position with unment course load taught by adjuncts. 

    *Note from ARM proposal from Provost: 

    • There is need for one new FT faculty hire (not two as the proposal stated). The hire would be for BSHS (with Alice Stephens and Leeann Denning leading the MPH program); search for this position in 2024-2025, with start in Fall 2025. This will modify the budget as originally proposed.

    • MPHP Program Outcome Mapping Assessment: Assessment tools TBD in program development pre-test assessment and posttest-assessment will be included.

    Gathered through pre-test assessment and posttest-assessment adn survey results. Enterence and Exit Assesment plan attached.

    Will assist with achieving accedation and ensure students reach graduation. 

Staffing Qualifications (Required for New Programs)
  • Describe the number and qulifications of full-time faculty that will be involved in this program. This should include a list of current faculty who would be involved and their relevant areas of expertise. This should also include a list of areas of expertise that would be required in additional faculty.
    PHP only: Primary instructional faculty must meet ALL FOUR requirements outlined below: • Employed full-time as faculty members at the home institution/university. The program uses the university’s definition of “full-time.” • Have regular responsibility for instruction in the program as a component of employment. • Individuals whose sole instructional responsibility is advising individual doctoral or research students do not meet CEPH’s definition of primary instructional faculty. • Spend a majority of time/effort (i.e., 0.50 FTE or greater) on activities associated with the program, including instruction. Research and service effort should also be included in the FTE allocated to the program if the research or service projects impact the program and its students. The program defines FTE allocations consistently and transparently and can clearly account for all time, effort and instructional or other responsibilities spent on degree programs outside the unit of accreditation. CEPH accreditation required minimum: Programs employ, at a minimum, three primary instructional faculty.
